Checked in with the expectant mothers this morning, stopping first at the owl near the Open Space Visitor Center, where I got a few better pictures of her.
And then it was off to the Rio Grande Nature Center, where we have a Cooper’s Hawk that’s recently started nesting and the other Great Horned Owl that’s been sitting there since early February. The Cooper’s seems very wary of humans and immediately leaves the nest to a nearby tree until they leave, so I haven’t gotten a good picture of her on the nest, but did get this one of her waiting patiently for me to leave.
In this picture, Mrs. Owl seems to be yawning or maybe doing an Ethel Merman impersonation; must be tough after a long night chasing down dinner.
Rumors are now going around that she may now have babies in that nest. Someone said they saw one yesterday, but it wasn’t visible this morning. However, it does look like the larder is filling up – Bunnies – It’s What’s for Dinner!
